The agents stationed in South Texas were warned by the Border Patrol that they could be the target of assassination attempts by Mexican cartel members.
The Rio Grande Valley region of the Border Patrol issued a notice this week, stating that its operations center had received intelligence regarding possible cartel violence against United States law enforcement near Fronton, Texas, an extremely small community consisting of only 200 people. This community is located 50 miles west of McAllen.
A second CBP official confirmed the document’s authenticity and said the Fronton area is a high-traffic area for drug smuggling because it is just right across the Rio Grande from Miguel Aleman, one of Tamaulipas’ most dangerous cities.
When working immediately on the border, Rio Grande Valley officials advised agents to wear ballistic armor, carry long-arm weapons, and work in groups.
There have been four incidents since September, agents in the Rio Grande Valley have been shot at from the Mexican side of the border, three in Fronton and then another one in Weslaco.
