As the death toll among civilians in Ukraine rises and the world braces for more unspeakable crimes against humanity, the Biden administration said Friday it is close to announcing a Russian-brokered deal with Iran that will pour billions of dollars into the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and push Tehran closer to nuclear weapons.
While the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015 was terrible enough, the upcoming agreement will be considerably worse.
Much has changed since the Obama administration signed the old Iran deal, which allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium, developing nuclear-capable missiles, and financing terrorism in exchange for billions in US sanctions relief. A pact that was designed to rein in Iran’s nuclear program and bring a hardline dictatorship toward moderation failed miserably.
The Obama administration stated that the Iran deal would ensure the most intrusive inspections the world had ever seen, but only Israel’s Mossad discovered evidence of Iran’s cheating, a secret nuclear weapons archive that the mullahs kept hidden before, during, and after the negotiations. Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, were led to at least four previously undiscovered facilities inside Iran as a result of this archive. Inspectors discovered indications of uranium at three of them.
The whole scope of Iran’s deception is unknown. Inspections haven’t gotten any more intrusive, and Iranian military locations remain closed to the public.
For years, Russia has been a vocal opponent of the IAEA’s Iran investigation. Because Moscow routinely violates its own international treaty responsibilities, whether through the deployment of chemical weapons or the current war crimes in Ukraine, Russian diplomats go to great lengths to protect rogue states like Iran and Syria from punishment.
The new agreement sides with Moscow, flouting the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, relaxing sanctions, and legitimizing Iran’s nuclear program without first demanding a full accounting of past and ongoing infractions. Simply put, it is a deceptive deal that will inspire other authoritarian countries to break their international obligations.
The Biden White House will blame Donald Trump for everything.
Those are inaccurate.
Iran has been breaking the old accord and leveraging its benefits to destabilize the Middle East. That’s exactly what they’re going to do now, thanks to the new worst agreement in history, brokered by Russia at the behest of the Biden administration.
