VETS have issued an urgent Easter warning to pet owners, fearing that hundreds of thousands of dogs will fall gravely ill this weekend.Chocolate should be avoided by dogs since it can make them quite ill.
One in every five dog owners had to rush their pet to the vet during the holidays after they got into sweet stashes. According to the Mirror, half a million canines may require emergency care in the coming days due to eating mishaps.
Only 67 percent of 3,000 dog owners know to keep chocolate treats away from their pets, according to a poll. Dr. Jayne Laycock, a YuMove veterinarian, advised the remaining 33% to store sweets under lock and key.
“For us two-legged pet owners, an Easter egg is one of the nicest rewards available,” she told the outlet. But, unfortunately, chocolate is extremely harmful to dogs. Chocolate is high in sugar, fat, and caffeine, none of which are very good for your dog’s health. Theobromine, a bitter alkaloid found in cacao beans, is the component that is truly dangerous to your dog. Caffeine and theobromine together lift our spirits and help us feel more alert in humans. It’s one of the reasons we’re so addicted to chocolate. However, whereas theobromine is easily digested by humans, it might make your dog sick and perhaps kill him.”
Theobromine levels in white chocolate are lower than in milk chocolate. It can, however, create major problems in dogs. Dark and baking chocolate, according to Dr. Laycock, are the most harmful to pets. She advised anybody with a dog to stay away from the typical Easter egg hunt for children.
“You can guarantee your hound will smell out the chocolate far faster than your kids, causing tears all around,” she said.
If a dog gets its paws on chocolate, a veterinarian should be contacted right away.
