Despite China’s threats and the Biden campaign’s failure to counter them, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) ultimately traveled to Taiwan. She just stayed long enough to say a few things. After that, she continued on her voyage through Asia, stopping in Japan.
However, Pelosi had a few instances throughout the trip where she appeared to be vying with Kamala Harris or Joe Biden for the award for the most incoherent or absurd remark.

She said this while she was in Taiwan in reference to “Benjamin Franklin, our presidency.”
In addition, it is not clear exactly what Pelosi was attempting to cite. “Freedom and democracy, freedom and democracy are one thing, security here. If we don’t have – we can’t have either, if we don’t have both.”
She may be trying to quote, “Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

She was also discussing the USA’s relationship with China when she was in Tokyo, which was a natural topic of conversation given the drama that was looming over them. Pelosi added that we will stand by some of her statements, such as that China wouldn’t prevent anyone from traveling to Taiwan.
Pelosi then continued by making other dubious remarks about China.
“We must work with China on issues that relate to the climate crisis, being two of the biggest committers, and we can learn a lot from China in that regard. But we also have to work together for some decisions.”
