After a devastating school shooting in Texas, Barack Obama came out of retirement on Tuesday to call for gun reform.
Obama blamed the killings on Republicans and the gun lobby, recalling his presidency’s demagoguery.
At least 19 students and two instructors were killed by a lone shooter, Salvador Ramos, 18, at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
Obama sought, but failed, to use the bloodiest school shooting since the Sandy Hook murder in 2012 to implement so-called common sense gun legislation, in one of his presidency’s most depressing setbacks.
Looking back on Sandy Hook, Obama blamed the inability of Congress to pass gun legislation on Republicans and the gun lobby.
Obama requested that the government take action, any action, and stated that bereaved families cannot wait another day.
“Our country is paralyzed, not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might help prevent these tragedies,” he added.
President Biden used similar emotive pleas in a speech asking for so-called common sense gun legislation, and Obama’s tone matched his. Biden made it plain that those opposed to gun regulation are paranoid and illogical, and that such limitations include a ban on assault rifles.
Biden prayed for the slain families before launching into a political attack on the gun lobby, saying it’s time to find the will to transform sadness into action.
The gun lobby, on the other hand, did not persuade millions of law-abiding gun owners that Democrats intended to disenfranchise them; Democrats did.
Obama and Biden didn’t even bother to criticize the monster who caused the Texas slaughter. Like they often do, their initial inclination was to use sorrow to pursue an agenda. It’s simply so formulaic.
