According to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, President Joe Biden is sticking to his commitment to select a black woman to the Supreme Court if a vacancy arises.
Associate Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, announced earlier Wednesday that he will step down at the end of his current term. While the White House has refrained from responding until Breyer makes his decision, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the president is sticking to a promise he made in 2020 about a prospective future appointment.
Prior to the press conference, Psaki tweeted that the White House would not comment on the news of Breyer’s impending retirement. President Joe Biden then reaffirmed the administration’s position, telling reporters that if Breyer makes an announcement, he’d be pleased to talk about it.
In 2020, Biden has promised to pick a black woman to the Supreme Court. The president stated at the time that he was compiling a list of suitable black women, but he refused to reveal it until it had been vetted.
