Russian forces have seized an American missionary.
Dmitry Bodyu, 50, was kidnapped from his house in the Ukrainian city of Melitopol on March 20.
His wife, Helen Bodyu, told the network that Russian soldiers entered their home and asked to know if her husband, who emigrated from the Soviet Union as a teenager, was an American citizen.
Bodyu’s Instagram page lists him as the pastor of Melitopol’s Word of Life Church, and Bodyu-Ogawa claims her father was caring to his flock when he was kidnapped.
Soldiers broke into his family’s home last week, taking cell phones, computers, and documents, according to members of his family.
According to Bodyu’s wife, Helen, Dmitry was compelled to leave with the army, who were non-aggressive. His American passport was also seized by the group, which consisted of eight to ten Russians.
“They walked in and they just started kind of questioning him right away, like, ‘Are you guys American citizens?’—that’s kind of like one of the first questions they had,” Bodyu’s daughter, Esther Bodyu-Ogawa, said.
Bodyu was born in the Soviet Union and emigrated to America with his parents when he was 17 years old, according to his family. According to his father, Sergey, who resides in North Texas, he has been working in Ukraine for nearly three decades. Bodyu spoke at Melitopol’s Word of Life Church, a city that made news earlier this month when Russians kidnapped and then freed its mayor.
