Last week, a Tesla driver fell asleep behind the wheel and slammed into a sidewalk in Hamlin, Texas, just missing two ladies who had gone outdoors for a smoke break seconds before, according to investigators.
According to Hamlin Police Chief Bobby Evans, two female police dispatchers were smoking cigarettes on the pavement outside the police headquarters on Wednesday.
Moments after the women return inside, a Tesla accelerates onto the pavement and slams into the building, according to surveillance footage.
The driver had fallen asleep as he approached Hamlin, Evans told reporters.According to Evans, the vehicle slammed into the corner of the city hall building and brought down the awning supports of five storefronts.
A blue Tesla leaps the curb and accelerates down the sidewalk, passing through the identical location where the dispatchers had just been, leaving a trail of damage in its wake, barely 10 seconds after the ladies reenter the building.
After narrowly missing being struck by an out-of-control Tesla, the two Texas police dispatchers are lucky to be alive.
The driver of the runaway electric car, according to Police Chief Bobby Evans, was returning to New Mexico. Hamlin is around 400 miles east of the state line between Texas and New Mexico.
