Authorities in Arizona have detained a man for allegedly cramming 183 animals inside his garage freezer, including several that were frozen alive.
According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, the dead animals were discovered at a residence formerly rented by Michael Patrick Turland, 43, in Golden Valley, in the state’s extreme west.
The creatures, which included dogs, turtles, lizards, birds, snakes, mice, rats, and bunnies, were discovered hidden inside a huge chest freezer, according to deputies.
The sheriff’s office stated that “because to their body orientation, some of the animals seemed to have been frozen alive.”
Turland had not returned numerous snakes she had loaned him for rearing many months prior when authorities discovered him on April 3 after a lady reported him missing.
The homeowner called her after discovering the frozen animals while cleaning up the property after Turland and his wife had departed and relocated out of state, according to the lady.
Turland was apprehended on Wednesday after deputies received information that he had returned to the rented home.
“When questioned, Turland finally acknowledged to freezing several of the animals while they were still alive,” according to the sheriff’s office.
He is charged with felony animal cruelty on 94 counts.
