Biden’s administration wants to establish communications with China via a “Red Phone”. The red phone isn’t a phone but an open line of communication with China. It is symbolic of the direct and open line of communication Washington D.C. maintained with Moscow during the Cold War.
A CNN report dated Wednesday states that a Biden-era “red phone” is still in its conceptual phase and has not yet been officially raised with China.
However, if the plan is implemented, the phone will be connected to a network that is described as “a wider effort to reduce conflict risk between the U.S.A. and China.”
According to the report, such a network could enable President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to instantly communicate via encrypted phone calls or text messages. It could also be used for national security purposes by high-ranking officials of Biden’s National Security Council.
However, a hotline similar to the one between China and Washington already exists. We do have a hotline. It is known to be there, but the few times it has been used, just rang in an empty room for hours upon countless,” stated Kurt Campbell, senior coordinator of the National Security Council Indo-Pacific.
After allusions to China’s increasing tensions, the line will be drawn. China has been under intense scrutiny by the international community recently for its secrecy regarding COVID-19, Hong Kong’s dismantling democracy, exiling the Dalai Lama, mass internment in Xinjiang Province of Uyghurs, and aggressive position in the South China Sea.
According to the New York Post, at the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi warned that any country that attempted to “bully” China would “face broken heads and bloodshed.”
“The Chinese people will absolutely not allow any foreign force to bully, oppress or enslave us and anyone who attempts to do so will face broken heads and bloodshed in front of the iron Great Wall of the 1.4 billion Chinese people,” Xi told thousands of Chinese at Tiananmen Square.
