Thursday’s statement by President Joe Biden indicated that he doesn’t have any plans to send U.S. soldiers into Haiti in order to ensure security for the Caribbean nation following the assassination.
“We’re only sending American Marines to our embassy to make sure that they are secure and nothing is out of whack at all,” Biden said at a news conference. “But the idea of sending American forces into Haiti is not on the agenda at this moment.”
In the wake of President Jovenel Moise’s assassination, the country is in turmoil.
The Haitian government under acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph had sent a letter to the Biden administration requesting the “urgent” deployment of troops to secure the country’s sea, air and oil ports.
According to the White House, the FBI provided ongoing security assistance and had provided investigation assistance to Haitian authorities upon their request.
The Haiti Police said Wednesday night that they had taken into custody two more people, including Gilbert Dragon, a former rebel leader. Dragon was a key player in the coup that saw Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Haiti’s President, be ousted.
