After the Supreme Court reversed the historic Roe v. Wade decision on Friday, protests broke out in a number of US locations.
A total ban on the practice will eventually be enacted in nearly half of the states as a result of the 5–4 ruling, which leaves the decision of abortion up to state lawmakers.
The opinions of Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett were joined by Associate Justice Samuel Alito.
Protesters gathered in sizable numbers in front of the Supreme Court and in places including Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and New York City.
In advance of protests in Manhattan’s Union Square and Washington Square Park, NYPD police are increasing patrols.
Threat actors have been seen promoting a variety of violent ideologies, including single-issue extremism, anti-government/anti-fascist extremism, and violent extremism with racial or ethnic motivations, according to NYPD Intelligence Bureau officials.
A department representative stated that they are in frequent touch with their Intelligence Bureau and their federal counterparts, and they are keeping an eye out for any signs in the danger stream.
On the steps of City Hall, the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, spoke and admitted that he and his then-girlfriend had had an abortion when they were adolescents.
Adams said that when his girlfriend told him she was pregnant, he had just gotten out of jail following his trespassing incident.
Since Eric had recently been arrested, Eric’s then-girlfriend questioned him about the baby’s future prospects.
“She made the decision that was smart for the both of us, she made the right call because she was empowered, she was in control.”
On Friday night, protests were also anticipated in Florida, Missouri, Georgia, and Texas.
Workers were observed in Dallas barricading windows of federal facilities and setting up fencing around the perimeter as protesters urged people online to participate in demonstrations while wearing a mask and unassuming attire.
Melinda Gutierrez, a spokeswoman for the police, warned that if any form of criminal crime is committed against a person or piece of property, police are ready to arrest protesters.
Before the verdict, fences were erected around the Supreme Court in case the demonstrations became violent.
Social media videos depicted buildings in downtown Washington, DC being boarded up as a result of the choice.
As protesters allegedly smashed on the building’s glass, tear gas was used at the US Capitol.
Additionally, protesters gathered in front of Justice Thomas’ Virginia residence.
Thomas stated that additional precedent-setting cases, including Griswold v. Connecticut, Lawrence v. Texas, and Obergefell v. Hodges, might make use of today’s ruling.
According to the cases, Americans have a constitutional right to contraception, same-gender relationships, and same-sex marriage.
Outside his house, a large group of people were yelling and waving flags and placards.
