Since his election in November 2021, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has generated a lot of attention, but this week he’s making news for a much less pleasant reason.
Adams refers to his NYPD coworkers as crackers in newly discovered camera footage from 2019.
On December 13, 2019, the incident occurred during a Harlem Business Alliance event. When Adams dropped the bomb, he was talking about his upcoming mayoral campaign.
Part of the clip goes: “Man, I was unbelievable in the police department with 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement. These negroes that wake every day and don’t like themselves, they are going to beat me up. The people who say, ‘Where’s our real Black leaders?’ They’re going to say, ‘Who’s Eric? Why does Eric think he should be mayor?’ Well, negro, you run, you run. Go raise the $7 million dollars.”
On Tuesday, Black Lives Matter activist Thomas Lopez-Pierre published a nearly two-minute diatribe to YouTube in which he sought to explain Adams’ alarming statement.
In a separate press conference on Friday, Adams apologized for the racially charged remark, attempting to contextualize it while also accepting responsibility for its hurtful character.

Adams worked with the officers he blew off as crackers for 20 years, and the video was allegedly not well received by his former coworkers.
