On Tuesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki attributed an increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans on “hate-filled rhetoric and language” surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic’s origins.
Psaki’s comments came in response to a reporter’s question about the White House’s response to an increase in crime against Asian Americans and recent statements from Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, who told the Associated Press that she faces each day torment online and fears for her parents’ safety when she learns of assaults on Asians in America.
A task force has been established by the president. He has engaged a senior worker to act as a representative and speak to the dangers, worries, and fears that the Asian American community is experiencing, Psaki said.
Psaki complimented Kim, saying she was incredibly courageous and brave to speak out about the fear she had, the fear she has for her family members, and that President Biden is absolutely committed to fixing the situation.
Psaki claimed in February that Biden has been outspoken and concerned about Asian Americans’ mistreatment. Psaki indicated at the time that the White House would support additional action on the local level or the federal level to address the surge in violence.
In addition, Psaki has blamed crimes against Asian Americans on remarks made by President Trump and his administration.
